Storyboard vs Animatics: What's the Difference?
Two planning tools, two different jobs — here's where each one actually helps, and why more studios are skipping straight to the animatic.
Ask five people in production what an animatic actually is and you'll get five slightly different answers. The confusion is fair — a storyboard and an animatic solve related but distinct problems, and knowing which one you need can save a production days of rework.
What is a storyboard?
A sequence of still frames.
A storyboard is a series of drawn or illustrated panels laid out in order, roughly like a comic strip. Each panel captures one key moment — a composition, a camera angle, a blocking decision — but the panels don't move, and there's no sense of how long each moment actually lasts.
What is an animatic?
A storyboard that has learned to move.
An animatic takes those same panels and adds timing, movement, transitions, and often a temporary audio track. Instead of flipping through static frames, a team can press play and watch the sequence unfold roughly the way the finished piece will — which is exactly what a storyboard alone can't show.

Why studios use animatics
Because timing is a decision, not a guess.
A script can hide a pacing problem that becomes obvious the moment a sequence has to run in real time. Studios build animatics before expensive production stages — a shoot day, a full animation pass, a VFX render — because it's far cheaper to discover a scene runs too long, too fast, or in the wrong order while it's still a rough cut than after it's been produced.
